What is Waist-to-Hip Ratio?

Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) is the ratio of the circumference of your waist to that of your hips. It is a simple measure of how fat is distributed in your body — specifically whether fat is concentrated in the abdomen (apple shape) vs. the hips and thighs (pear shape).

Abdominal (visceral) fat surrounding the organs is far more dangerous than subcutaneous fat on the hips and thighs. WHR is endorsed by the World Health Organization as a predictor of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.

Why does this matter?

Visceral fat releases inflammatory chemicals and fatty acids directly into the liver, raising cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar. WHR can identify this risk even when your BMI appears normal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is WHR better than BMI?

For predicting cardiovascular and metabolic disease risk specifically, WHR and waist circumference are generally considered more informative than BMI. However, all three measurements together give the most complete picture.

High abdominal fat accumulation is linked to: high-calorie diets (especially refined carbs and sugar), sedentary lifestyle, chronic stress, poor sleep, genetics, hormonal imbalances (especially low estrogen in women post-menopause), and excess alcohol.

Yes. With targeted lifestyle changes — calorie deficit, aerobic exercise, stress reduction, and quality sleep — visceral fat decreases relatively quickly, often faster than subcutaneous fat.

No. Waist measurements are not meaningful during pregnancy. This tool is intended for non-pregnant adults. Use pregnancy-specific health tools and consult your OB/GYN.
