What is BMR Calculator?

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs to perform basic life-sustaining functions — such as breathing, blood circulation, cell production, and temperature regulation — while at complete rest.

BMR accounts for 60–75% of your total daily energy expenditure. Understanding your BMR is the foundation of effective weight management, whether you want to lose, gain, or maintain weight.

Why does this matter?

Without knowing your BMR, any diet plan is guesswork. If you eat fewer calories than your BMR long-term, your body enters starvation mode and starts burning muscle. If you eat significantly more, you gain fat. BMR is your metabolic baseline.

What formula does this calculator use?

We use the Mifflin–St Jeor equation (1990), which is considered the most accurate for most adults: Males: (10 × weight) + (6.25 × height) − (5 × age) + 5. Females: (10 × weight) + (6.25 × height) − (5 × age) − 161.

BMR is your calorie burn at complete rest. TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) is BMR multiplied by an activity factor. TDEE reflects your actual daily calorie needs including exercise and movement.

Eating significantly below your BMR is not recommended. It leads to muscle loss, nutritional deficiencies, and a slowdown of metabolism. A safe deficit is 300–500 kcal below your TDEE, not below your BMR.

On average, men have more lean muscle mass and less body fat than women of the same weight. Muscle tissue is metabolically more active, leading to a higher resting calorie burn.

Yes. As you lose weight, your BMR decreases because your body mass decreases. Recalculate your BMR every 5–10 kg of weight change to keep your calorie targets accurate.
