Your Estimated Body Fat
Want a personalized fitness and nutrition plan?
Consult a Nutritionist Near YouThis tool uses the U.S. Navy circumference method and provides a general estimate. DEXA scans or skinfold calipers offer greater accuracy. Not a substitute for professional medical advice.
What is Body Fat Percentage?
Body Fat Percentage (BF%) measures what proportion of your total body weight is fat tissue. Unlike BMI, it distinguishes between fat mass and lean mass (muscle, bone, organs, water).
The US Navy method (used here) estimates body fat from circumference measurements of the waist, neck, and hips (for women). It was developed by the US military for quick field assessments and has been validated across large populations.
Why does this matter?
Two people can have the same BMI but very different body compositions. A 75 kg man with 25% body fat is very different from a 75 kg athlete with 12% body fat. Body fat percentage gives you a far more accurate health picture.
How to Use This Tool
- Use a flexible tape measure. Measure at the widest points of each body part.
- Waist: measure at the narrowest point (men) or navel level (women), after exhaling normally.
- Neck: measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple).
- Hips (women only): measure at the widest point of the hips/buttocks.
- Enter your height, then click calculate.
Tips for Accurate Results
- Measure yourself at the same time of day (morning is best) for consistency.
- Take 2–3 measurements and use the average for better accuracy.
- The US Navy method has a margin of error of ±3–4% compared to DEXA scanning.
- Hydration levels affect body fat estimates slightly — avoid measuring after intense exercise.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this more accurate than BMI?
For assessing body composition, yes. BMI only considers weight and height. Body fat percentage tells you how much of your weight is actually fat, which is more directly related to metabolic health.
What is the most accurate way to measure body fat?
DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scanning is the gold standard. Hydrostatic weighing and Bod Pod are also very accurate. The US Navy tape method is less precise but requires no equipment or cost.
How quickly can I reduce my body fat percentage?
A realistic rate is 0.5–1% body fat per month with a consistent calorie deficit and exercise routine. Faster reductions usually involve muscle loss. Patience and consistency are key.
Can I have a healthy BMI but high body fat?
Yes — this is called “skinny fat” or normal-weight obesity. It is more common in people with low muscle mass. This is why body fat percentage is a more informative metric than BMI alone.
